Membership Information


Visitors are welcome at any Public Lecture Meeting. Also visitors are very welcome to visit the Godlee Observatory a few times before deciding whether or not to join the Society. If you wish to know more about the MAS why not take a quick tour of the Godlee Observatory, or better still, come down to see us. Please read the Health & Safety Notice below.

As a member of the Manchester Astronomical Society you would have access to the Godlee Telescopes for visual observing or you can bring along a camera to image the Moon and Planets. Membership also gives you use of the library where you can borrow books, videos, CD's and DVD's. There are also a number of telescopes available for loan to members.
The Godlee Observatory is open on most Thursdays from about 6:30pm - 9:30pm except when there is a public lecture which is held on the third Thursday from October to March inclusive, with the AGM in April. The Godlee Observatory is usually also closed over the Christmas / New Year period.

Membership Subscriptions

Members Subscription: £20.00 per annum
Student Membership (under 18 or in full time education): 50% of adult subscription (£10.00)
Institutional Membership: £15.00
(Note Joining after the AGM (3rd Thursday in April) the annual subscription is halved. If you join after July 1 the full subscription is payable but you don't have to pay again until Oct 1 the following year)

If you wish to join the Society you may print out a Membership application form, and post it with your subscription, to the address at at the bottom of the form or bring it along to one of the meetings. Alternatively, why not come along to one or two of the meetings on a Thursday evening before deciding - application forms can be provided at the Godlee Observatory. Please note that due to Health and Safety Restrictions members under 11 years of age are not allowed to enter the Godlee dome area (where the telescopes are situated), the spiral staircase or the walkway on the outside of the dome. Health & Safety Notice

Safety procedures within the Godlee Observatory are maintained for the safety of members, staff and visitors to the observatory. Please note that due to Health and Safety Restrictions members under 11 years of age are not allowed to use the spiral staircase or enter the Godlee dome area (where the telescopes are situated).
All visitors must be accompanied by a warden or a trained MAS member when entering the Godlee dome. The walkway on the outside of the dome is no longer accessible, so please do not ask to view or photograph the Manchester skyline. All persons in the Godlee Observatory complex must observe all safety procedures and notices as indicated or advised.

All group visits must be pre-arranged to ensure there are an appropriate number of trained personnel present; this may require a risk assessment.

All visitors will receive safety instruction upon arrival.
